I'm about to start my first year teaching highschool science. Kind of a career change, I have been in the military, and had jobs, payed into social security, as well as my own retirement, I am in my mid 30's. I just looked at a TRS calculator and holy moly! If I'm not mistaken, they want 16,000 if you gross 52,000. That alone would reduce your net take home to 36,000.... I kinda don't want to have anything to do with this TRS, and I'd like to just use 403b. Please tell me there is a way to opt out. I haven't signed a contract yet.

I don't think you can. You can't get social security and TRS, so maybe there is a loophole somewhere. I haven't found it though.

It's not that much. I think the deduction is a little more than 7% a paycheck. It is all yours to withdraw if you ever leave the system.

Trust me when I way this OP, you will, in a few decades, be grateful for the mandatory benefit. Life gets in the way, and money you can get your hands on, which seemed like a great idea at the time, will no longer be there to use when you work no more. I seriously doubt your numbers are correct, simply because when I left one job, and wasn't vested, the check that came to me was a fraction of what you are claiming. Whatever is there, let it grow in peace.

The OP hasn't been back since he posted. I wonder if he decided not to teach.
