Every year, my principal and I do a staff luncheon. He doesn't want to do it this year (he found out he's being transferred to another site, so he has already emotionally checked out from here). Anyway, can you guys possibly list some neat things your admin has done for you? I already wrote everyone a personalized card that expresses my appreciation, but I want to do something special for them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It sucks that your teachers don't get a luncheon because your principal is acting like a brat.

With that having been said, a personalized card like you've done is great. I also always appreciate good-quality donuts and bagels, school supplies, and school shirts.

In the past 2 years we've had: a sno cone stand come to school and make sno cones, a hot dog vendor come and serve hot dogs, a massage therapist come by and do 15 minute massages... I'm sure there were others I can't think of now.

My previous school (same district) was very small, 6 teachers, + 4 teachers at juvenile hall (very different schedules) My previous principal for 3 years would leave something on our desks, a personally written card about what she appreciated about us (specifically each of us), a Starbucks card, a Starbucks cup or other small things. It was nice, it was really the thought that counted.

This year we just got a new principal 2 weeks ago, I highly doubt he even thinks about it. Oh well, I still love my job, but an admin who appreciates staff makes a huge difference.

I think you could still do a lunch, maybe order drinks (coffee, tea, smoothie) for everyone, have someone go classroom to classroom and find out what the teacher wants.

I think you should do a teacher appreciation year. Gather a bunch of small ideas and spread them out over the course of the year.

Jeans are always great for us. One year we got to wear them for an entire week! Definitely a favorite amongst us all.
A little food is good too. One year we got homemade truffles. They were amazing!
A local restaurant also donates a gift card usually.

I'd totally forgotten this but a previous school I worked at did a massage chair one year and it was AMAZING. I would definitely treasure a thoughtful and personal note though so I think you're already ahead of the game there. I'm also with Caesar on school shirts. That same school gave us all really nice, warm hoodies one year (I live and work in snow country) and I still wear it regularly. So comfy!

One year, my AP gave all the teachers a 30 minute break pass. He had a sign up sheet on his doir, and he would cover your class for 30 minutes. You could come in late, leave early, take a longer lunch, whatever. It was awesome!

Wait. ADMIN does stuff for the teachers? Our Teacher Appreciation week stuff is all done by our PTA.

Frankly, that personalized card thing is already amazing. But you can't go wrong with food or school supplies. Expo markers? Post it notes? :) I also like the school shirt idea, because I've had to buy all mine.

The 30 minute break idea is fantastic! I forget what grade levels you have at your school, but another idea is to offer a voucher where you drop off and pick up the teacher's class from a specialist class or from lunch/ recess.

I've worked at schools where they offer the massage but I am weird about massages and strangers touching me and that felt weird to do at school so I always passed on that.

I also think gift cards/ small gifts like coffee mugs are great, as are school shirts and other school swag.

It's too late for this year unless you know of a supplier, but my favorite was a lunchbox with the school logo.

I always enjoy when admin puts on a good lunch with hot food instead of the usual chips and dips. It's nice when all the teachers and staff get to enjoy a meal together stress free. We also got stationery which is always useful and appreciated. One year we even got a yoga class to help us with anti stress techniques. I don't think it really matters what you do, as long as it comes from the heart and teachers feel appreciated that's all that matters.

So here's what I decided: I got everyone a Starbucks gift card and made personalized Hershey Bar wrappers with our school name and logo. I will place the chocolate bar and gift card (along with the handwritten card) on their desks over the weekend and they'll see it on Monday morning.

When we came back to school in August, I had gotten everyone a school spirit shirt with their last name on the back. I think they liked them because they wear them quite often (in my district, teachers can wear jeans Monday-Friday...and most do).

Food is always great. Our school actually has it set up so that different clubs do something for the teachers every day. For example, one day beta club will bring a chocolate fountain with fruit and wafers to dip in it; another day Key club will bring pastries and coffee, etc.. The week always culminates in hamburgers grilled by the superintendent for all the teachers.
