Hi, I am looking for math word or story problems that are appropriate for fifth grade. Anything where they have to explain their thinking. I would appreciate the help! Thanks!

Try these, maybe? Mrs. Padilla made some pies. She sold 3/5 of them in the morning and 1/4 of the remainder in the afternoon. If she sold 200 more pies in the morning than in the afternoon, how many pies did she make? Three boys, John, Sam and Jed shared a number of stamps in the ratio 3 : 5 : 7. If Sam received 45 stamps, how many more stamps did Jed receive than John?

Dr. Math's site has a decent list - you'll have to sort through to find questions that are appropriate for your group. Remember, for some reason that I don't really understand, kids do *really* well when using monetary examples! http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/sets/mid_word_problems.html

Try this site. Our school has math problems of the day divided into grade levels k-5. http://www.elemedu.ccs.k12.nc.us/Resources/Math-Documents/Problem/Problem_of_the_Day-Main.htm

Thanks so much for the ideas We have been asked to write daily in math, and I am hoping that these ideas will help.
