By script do you mean your plan of action for the first day? :)

A few things I plan on doing:

    Get to Know you game
Read "The Kissing Hand". Do a short writing relating back to the book
    Tour the school/meet everyone
Go to cafeteria to discuss lunch procedures
Read a rules book - have students come up with our class rules
Each student will illustrate one of the rules.
    Lunch/Recess/Specials
    Name Game
Graph - How they will go home that day
Make a First Day of School Booklet
    Another Name Game
First Day poem - these will go in their Brand New poetry folder
Pack up/discuss expectations when getting ready to go home

I try to do alot of getting to know you games the first few days. And, we also do alot with rules and expectations. We practice, practice, practice.

funny that you asked that... I thought the original poster actually meant a script as in "exactly what I will say the first day of school".
This might sound absolutely ridiculous: This is my second year teaching first grade and I really did start making a script of exactly what I will say on the first day of school.
1)What will I say to introduce myself
2)How I will explain my rules in kid friendly language.
    3) How I will give them a tour of my room, and how will I explain what each space is used for.
4)How I will introduce the first journal activity. Broken down into itty bitty steps.
    etc.

Y'know how teachers say that the beginning of the year is so hard because you forget that they're really just students of the grade before - not the students that you sent off to the grade above?

Well I'm hoping that If I remind myself NOW that they are just coming from kindergarten, and that they don't know where the top of the page is or where to put there name, or how to hold a pencil and I plan for how I will explain it to them, then it won't be such a shock the first day!

Sorry , this was all very wordy - hope it makes sense!

Let's see... My school does a really neat thing where, before the beginning of school bell, my old (last year) class comes to me in the morning of the first day. Then my assistant and I divide them into one of 3 second grade classes and send them off.

After that, my new friends come into first grade and I encourage them to find their desks! Then we go to the morning rug area and I read them either "Chrysanthemum" or "The Kissing Hand" and we discuss the book. Last year I had them draw or write (depending on level) their favorite parts of the story... then we drew a picture of ourselves on day 1 of grade one that we take out in May and do again to compare our writing/drawing ability. Hmm.. I'll have to look at my plan books for last year cause I'm forgetting what else I do!

    Hope this helps somewhat!
    :hugs:

    Hi Miss Kirby,
Could you share your routine songs? Like the Listening song? Thanks!

By the way your first day script looks great!

Thank you Ranger for posting that! I had read it last summer and couldn't find it anywhere. I have been feeling so overwhelmed with working on my masters' really hard this summer and not wanting to prepare for back to school. I really needed that excitement back to school brings and reading that passage about her first day really did it! I think I am ready to begin getting things underway now! :):thanks:

Your welcome, I had found it last year and I couldn't remember where. I made a copy and put it in my first day folder for next year. She has a great site.
