One of my most difficult behavior students FINALLY finished an assignment today -- COMPLETELY. He wrote complete sentences, got the answers right, knew exactly what had happened in the story. And all it took was me waiting him out while he fussed and threw a tantrum and cried under my table for 20 minutes while the rest of the class started our party. But he did it, and he did it really well. This kid has been a struggle all year. He's argumentative, disruptive, work avoidant... the whole deal. He pushes all of my (and my co-teacher's) buttons, and I've lost my temper with him a LOT (and I did on Tuesday, too. He called me mean and in my head I'm like "Yup, and you earned it.") I don't think he's finished an assignment completely or to our expectations (he has stuff that's technically done but done very poorly) all year. I forced myself the last two days to just calmly repeat requests until he follows them or stops arguing, no matter how he responds. Today he argued less; still pouted and glared, but mostly did what he was asked to do with only a couple reminders. And he finished two things that were difficult for him and made him shut down for a bit. (The other thing was cutting a flag for his Valentine's Day mailbox; he crawled under his table and cried about that too, but he came out on his own and made a flag all by himself). So. Today was a win. And I'm really proud of him.
