Besides the walking and standing, there's the climbing on ladders to staple things up high, putting up and taking down bulletin boards, we always had to post things outside our rooms, too, and I was forever moving boxes and trying to reorganize.
One winter, the podiatrist told me not to stand, so I wheeled around my room on my chair. It was a riot.

I wish shoes had those cushioned mats as insoles.

Thank you again for the replies everyone, it's been fascinating to read about the variety of views on the subject. It seems that we are affected in different ways but can all agree that as long as we keep moving then we can keep pain to a minimum.

You should add back and knee pain. Would like to see a study on that. There is no way to get through a day (preschool) without bending and stooping. We also spend a lot of time sitting on the floor and on our knees. That makes no sense. I was told I had to sit on the floor with the kids in one job. I sat on pillows.

My wife expressed the same wish last week, so I sliced one of those thick black spongy mats (recycled) in half like a layer cake and inserted them into her shoes - made her sooo happy!

I found one tossed aside for the dumpster. Asked if I could have it...and they said ok. I sanitized it and put it in my kitchen!

I started buying shoes a half size up so I could fit thick insoles in them!

I also spent $$$ on Tieks, supposedly super comfy and loved by teachers and travelers... WASTE OF MONEY.
They are extremely uncomfortable and I only wear them on non-teaching days or for quick errands.
