I've been doing this for the 3 years that I've been teaching and I've never had a problem. (Okay, I once had a parent who happened to live down the block from me knock on my door to talk to me about her son, but that wasn't because I gave out my cell number.) Parents often work and can't reach me during school hours. Plus, I frequently call parents in the evenings from home so they have my number on their caller ID anyway.

Some teachers are telling me that I'm making a big mistake and parents will misuse my number in some way.

    What do you think?

Nope. I did my first year of teaching, and I had a parent calling me all the time! It was hard though because at that time, we had no school phones except for the 1 phone in the office. Now they can either e-mail me, or call my school phone and leave a message and I'll call them back.

I forget which job it was that told me this, but they said to ONLY ever call from the school's phone and to not give out personal info like that out. I'm sure you could call blocked thru your cell if you wanted to.

No don't do it. Why would they even need your number? When I take kids on residential trips I replace the Sim card in my phone with another paid for by the school. If necessary the parents can have that number should an emergency arise.

I do, but I teach in a small community and they can get it if they really want it. Only one parent abuses it, she goes through cycles.

Not a chance. My students' parents can call and leave a message for me on the school's general voicemail, which my school's secretary will get to me first thing, or they can email me.

Nope. I have a phone and voicemail and email at school. If it is too inconvenient for them to have me call during my planning period - which starts at 6:30am or right after school at 2pm, then it is too inconvenient for me to have them call and interrupt my dinner, my shower, my family time.

I know some teachers in my Master's program mentioned having a google voice number to give parents. Its a free internet based phone number where parents can leave a voice mail.

I wouldn't want to give parents my real cell number.

Nope. A few of my parents from this class have it, though.
    A. I have several staff children.
    B. Another parent is a sub at my school whom I've used for years.
    C. We did a Thirty-one fundraiser and my phone number is on the receipts.

I will be giving it out to my chaperones on Thursday. We're going to the zoo. However, it is May, and the ones that will get it are not the type to pester me!

No way! (To giving out my cell phone number)

As an older colleague once told me, "YOUR office closes at 3:00."

I do. But like a pp poster, I live in a small community. I have a handful of parents that I text regularly. Plus, they can get it pretty easily as a lot of students have my number too.

Small community here, too, and we didn't have any way for parents to leave a message (other than calling the school secretary) until this year. In 6 years I have never had a problem with a parent abusing it. I get maybe one phone call a month...

I try not to because when I answer my cell phone, I'm almost never at work, so I feel like when it rings, it should only be for business pertaining to me as a person, not me as a teacher.

In the past 7 years I have only (knowingly) given out my cell phone number twice. The first time was when I called the mother of a child who was being sexually assaulted by another student. The second time was for a child whose mom was a single parent and the child had A LOT of issues, so she would text me periodically to check how he was doing, or to tell me about his new meds, or I'd text her when I thought the child was about to go off.
