Do you ever get nervous to return after a break? This is my first year and I know for many different reasons I will be applying to a new school next school year. My year is not going bad, but I so nervous to return after break. I almost wish I didn't have a break because I would still be in the flow of things. :/ Is this normal?

I remember years that I wouldn't want to go back or that I wish the break was longer. It was worse when the kids were younger. Sometimes, I'd get the feeling that I'd like to be a stay at home mom. I wasn't ready to go back this fall, but that was due to some ongoing medical concerns.

I don't remember how I felt the year that I made the decision to not to return to the school at the end of the year. Actually, I was depressed much of the year, the students, husband, & own kids are what kept me going, it sure wasn't the principal or anyone else in that school.

No matter what, even when I look forward to going back, it takes a day or so to get back into the routine of things.

    Yes, it is normal.
It will take you, and the kids, a few days to adjust.
I try to enjoy them and their stories instead of getting deep into the curriculum again.

I too dread the after break time.
We only have off Dec 25-Jan 1.
Yes I dread the long haul until May.
We do not have a single day off until then.
    Hoping for that snow day.

Yes. I always do. Mostly because we really start heavy test prep, which this year I'm really dreading, more than usual. This group is, well...let's say they're not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree.

And leaving my little boy is really hard. :(

I know I'm freaking out. Mostly because I feel like I need to prep a ton more that I haven't yet. First week was relaxing with family. This week, it will be nose to the grindstone.

You had to work on Christmas Eve? You get no Spring Break?:eek:
Is this a public school? If so, where is your Union?

OP, I'm always nervous to go to work; just a daily feeling of anxiety and dread.

Rabbit, sounds like my schools growing up. We would start around Aug. 23rd and been done before Memorial Day. Our only breaks were Labor Day, Thanksgiving & the day after, & Good Friday. We had a 1/2 day on Christmas Eve and usually went back on January 2nd or 3rd.

    Yes, they were public schools.

WOW that is a short school year (we started after Labor Day and go until June 27!!), but no breaks during the year?? I don't think I could deal with that.

To the OP - yes, it's totally normal. It's only my second year, but I understand how you're feeling. You have the momentum going, and then you get back to feeling like yourself again, away from school...and it's scary to go back to the craziness. (and waking up super early! lol) It helps me to plan some exciting and new things to start after break. I've revamped my schedule and we will be starting writers workshop, so I'm excited to try new things with my students. That gives me the motivation I need to get back into the grind.

I will be applying to a new school for next year as well. My year is going fine and I love my current school, but I absolutely HATE my current area. I would guess that you, like me, are experiencing a lot of anxiety about that. I have to tell my admin, mentor, and lead teacher in January so I can get letters of rec (hiring starts in Feb where I want to move), and I know things are going to be really different after that. Job searching is so stressful and demoralizing, so I really think that might be part of your hesitation about going back, realizing that this stretch from January to the end of the year also includes that component. I know I am feeling very uneasy about that as well. Best of luck to you!

    Same here.

Although, I don't know that I would call the feeling "nervous(ness)". But, yes, every night I dread having to wake up and go into work the next day. I don't think I feel it anymore strongly now, after a long break, than I do any other day. It's just a persistent feeling.

And, it's creeping further and further into my weekends now, too. It used to start on Sunday afternoons. Now, it's worked it's way up to Saturday evening. :|

Start a countdown until you next day off
Plan a relaxing or fun day for the first day back
Make a list of new things you want to try this month with your class
Make plans with friends for next weekend

Find something that will give you a little bit of motivation and you'll be fine. Are you going back Thursday? Knowing it's a short week and that I have plans Friday with a friend who just had a baby is helping me feel better about going back.

Never nervous, just the "Crap, it's back to the grind again!" feeling.

Personally, I'm glad we're going back on the 2nd. It gives my students (and myself) Thursday and Friday to shake off the vacation and get back into routine so we can go full force next Monday.

We go back Monday. I'm anxious to reflect upon and change some things that haven't been working. I had planned to go in and work today, however my dog got sick while we were out of town and we had to stay an extra night. So I lost today traveling. Now I can't get in until Thursday.

My only concerns are in the potential "presents" my students may have received over the break and that their aim may have improved.

I'm not nervous, I was happy for the break; both students and teachers needed it. For us it's different anyways, it's almost like the start of a new school year. Quite a few students left (some graduated, a lot were able to go back to their regular schools), and we will also get new students (those who were just expelled from their schools or got released from the lock up).
This is really good, because we'll have a fresh start, with a new schedule.
I'll also be teaching a new, easier elective.
I haven't gone near the school so far because the first week they were on a mandatory shut down (no one could have access) but I thought about going in today just to clean so I can feel better. Then the week after new weekend I will devote most of my time and energy to planning and setting up things.
I at least figured out what I'll teach for the rest of the year, week by week.
I will be totally ready and happy going back by the 13th.

I always love coming back after break. I feel refreshed, the kids feel refreshed... I always feel like I accomplish more the first week back than in the three weeks before break.

I did have a school nightmare last night. I get those around time to start back. I'm on year 21. Other than that, I'm not all that worried. I do worthy about my kiddos acting up for their sub because they're a lively bunch. I'm only working 1 1/2 days before I'm out for surgery.

I feel the exact same way. I can't even enjoy my weekends because I dread, dread, dread Monday ... and Tuesday, and Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday. I just have so much anxiety and stress about work that it is with me at all times and I can never relax until the summer.
