Do 2nd graders in general know how to use one? If so, do you require them to have one?

No, they don't come in knowing how to use them well...you need to teach them. You'd be better off with a class set of dictionaries than requiring one at this age.

Last spring I had to teach my 10 year old daughter to use a PHONE BOOK :)

She had no idea they even existed! She thought you just looked everything up online. Fine, till the computer goes down.

We spend a lot of time learning how to use the dictionary in my room. We have a class set, which helps because they're all the same.

    My dictionary consists of:

    1) Open up Google.

    2) Type in : Define _______________________

It even comes with pronunciations! I would actually be sure to teach kids that way as well if you have computer access.
