I've tried searching, but no luck (and I'm in a rush lol!) What are some of the rules you have in your preschool classroom? I have 3 - 4yr olds. I was thinking along the line of 'Be kind to your friends, Be kind to your teacher, Be kind to your classroom' sort of thing.

You should have no more than 3-5 rules that are simple and easy to remember.

We list them with our children (they come up with them), and then combine them to form 3 simple rules:
    1 Be nice
    2 Be safe
    3 Be active listeners

These rules sum up everything. We then talk about ways to do each of these, and role play situations where we follow/don't follow each rule, so that they better understand them.

These are posted in the classroom at all times, with pictures.

Here are mine . . . for whatever they're worth:

    Walking feet inside.
    Use kind words.
Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

I came up with these after observing and seeing what the biggest problems seemed to be in my class. However, had I not started midyear, I probably would have asked my class to help me come up with them. Hmm, I probably should have these posted on a wall somewhere.

    1. Be nice to others.
    2. Listen to the teachers.
    3. Work & play safely.
    4. Be quiet indoors.

I have clipart to represent each of these rules & I made them into a book. You can see it on my rules webpage.

    respect yourself
    respect your neighbor
    respect your surroundings (or enviornment)

everything i need can be found in those 3 rules. need inside feet-that would be respecting your surroundings and respecting your neighbor who will be either knocked over or have their tower knocked down.

    see?

I had my kids help come up with ours at the beginning of the year. We have:

    1. Sit criss-cross applesauce.
    2. Listening ears.
    3. Quiet mouth.
    4. Be nice!

I have black line drawings that I got out of our PATHS for Preschool curriculum to go with each of our rules. They seem to work well.

    3. Use your words.
    4. Listen to the teacher's directions.
    5. If someone gets hurt, we take care of them.

Thats what I initially had, but thought that I'd make it easier to understand.

I like the Hands are for Helping one too. I think I'll have my kids help decorate a banner that says that.

I got mine from someone on here. Sorry I can't remember the name, but she has a fantastic web site. They are short, to the point, and easy for four year olds to remember. They are:
    Looking eyes
    Listening ears
    Walking feet
    Helping hands

I have picture clues beside each one and they are posted in several places throughout the classroom.

    1. Listen while your teacher is talking.
    2. Follow directions quickly.
    3. Respect others, yourself, and your school.
    4. Raise your hand to speak.
    5. Be safe, be honest.

The rules are posted and have hand signals. We repeat them a few times a day.

    Picture of rules chart enclosed

I have a picture of our rules chart on my rules page in addition to lots of info about rules in pre-k. I will try to post a pic below but that almost never works for me :(

The most important thing about rules in an EC classroom is that they have visuals paired with the words since the kids can't read them. You have to make the rules meaningful to the children and concrete, not abstract.

Mine are similar to everyone elses....

    1. - Criss-cross... (we do a little poem while we practice)
    2. - Raise your hand AND wait.
    3. - Don't bug your buddies - hands and feet are to yourself (and your unkind words...)
    4. - Clean up after yourself
    5. - Audience Manners (eyes are looking, ears are listening, voices and noises are turned OFF)

We repeat these every morning.... Sometimes we discuss one in depth... depending on what's going on that day.

for the longest time in my classrooms I had:
    Be Kind
    Be Respectful
    Be Safe
Show Etiquette (This was always fun to introduce. Kids love saying the word and don't forget it!)

This year, I am teaching for an academy that already had rules in place. They are:
    I am kind
    I am helpful
    I share
I ask first (followed by the mantra: "Ask before you do. If you don't ask, you don't know!")
    I have fun

Personally, I like the first set better but my current students remember and know the latter too.

During circle time (morning meeting) I also do "Give Me 5":
    1. Sit on your bottom
    2. Cross your legs
    3. Hands in your lap
    4. Eyes on the teacher
    5. Quiet mouths
