I am a new 5th grade teacher and I am using the Hollywood theme. I am using lots of "star" sayings. I have Lights Camera Action Read in the class library, lots of decorations, there are lots of things online in forums I have found ideas for this. Good Luck!

I thought so much about themes but didn't have a lot of room to make a big one. So my theme is pugs. I love pugs and have so much stuff so I took it all to school. My boys rolled their eyes at first but then they were the first ones to buy me more pug stuff.

My whole school tends to do themes based on what they like or collect but if I didn't the USA?Route 66 theme sounds fun and educational. Don't think my pugs really have a big point:)

Ok, I just saw my classroom, and I'm concerned. It is very small with no bulletin boards. The walls have plenty of room for stuff, though. There are three chalk boards- one I will probably use for teaching, and the other two will probably be bulletin boards.

I guess my question is how do you start. I seem to have forgotten everything I learned when it came to classroom setup. I will take any ideas for desk set up. . .anything. I was disappointed when I saw my classroom; it wasn't at all what I expected. I don't mean to complain, but I feel very unsure I know what to do.

Thank you for all your help!

    Kristin

(Nearly chokes on a Skittle) Mmmmmm!!!! You got me excited about my Jasztalville theme. My Science/S.S. area is called the Jasztalville Museum of Science and Industry.

My classroom library is called the Jasztalville Public Library.

Mrs. Long: If you are allowed to, buy thin corkboard squares and hotglue them up to make a bulletin board.

We have a school-wide space theme to really target on our science curriculum. On our grade level, we are doing space/Star Wars. I've bought some Star Wars mini-figure cut-outs to use for class helpers, identifying jobs during experiments, grouping. Our theme, unless I change it again, is "Blasting Our Way Through a Stellar Year". I'm trying to find some cheap glow in the dark sheets to use for my science word wall. Also, I'm finding some great quotes on patience, hard work, diligence from Episodes 3-6.

Wow, some great ideas! My theme this year goes with my website theme: "Wild About..." My outside bulletin board will have animal print border with zebra letters that say "Wild About 5th Grade!" and a red background. Throughout the year this board will display projects, papers and other work.

Inside, I will have different areas of the room designated for for each curriculum areas, such as "Wild About Math" for our math area. I will be making some trees for a few corners of the room and have some animal print rugs and a jungle print on the reading loveseat. Hopefully it will all pull together. :)

missred---onthe first day you could have you kids write an essay, "What I am wild about....to tell about the things they like...and gives you a chance to see what their writing skills are like.

Mrs. Long---look around on this site, there are many pics of classrooms for ideas---you don't have to have BB's just put up some sort of background like paper or material, whatever size fits the space and but border around it and you have an instant BB to fit your space.

    Monkeying around in 5th grade

Does that sound like everyone will just be playing/goofing off and not really getting any work done? I had thought of using a construction theme complete with yellow and black borders, hard hat labels, etc. but thought it sounds too much like all work and no play. I don't know...

I think you'd be okay with Monkeying aroung in 5th grade because I'm assuming your focus will be on monkeys?

I like the construction theme. There is bulletin border that has Kids at Work on it and it looks like caution tape, which would be perfect! I bought it through a teacher catalog a couple years ago, but don't remember which one.

To me that does sound like goofing off. How about using that phrase on your behavior chart? I forget which thread it was on, but someone's "best behavior" slogan was "no monkeying around." I think she has a jungle theme, too.

I'm still deciding, but I think I'll end up picking a jungle and a space theme (since I can't pick!), and I'll be using "no Monkeying" on my chart. Just an idea.

I have seen that border. It is the one I was refering to! The "monkying around" was kind of to go with the jungle theme that was mentioned.

Last year my theme was "Soar into 5th Grade." I used hot air ballons etc. The year before that I did "Licensed to Learn." I made licenses for each student and took their pictures on the first day. I put them on the licenses and laminated them. I have no clue for this year.

Wow! Great ideas! In "Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire," he makes a board with license plates from each state that spells out the Preamble. It is really cool! It's based on a piece of art in the Smithsonian. You can order the poster, too.

I LOVE that idea, DTT. You can see a picture of it here:
    http://steeplemedia.com/blogs/junk_...e-to-the-constitution-mike-wilkins-style.aspx

I'm going to work on making those license plates into a PDF if you want to print them out and make your own. I'll post when it's done.

Whoo-hoo! It's done, and it looks pretty cool. If you want to do the license plate BB, here you go! I'll post this under general ed, too, for those who don't teach fifth grade.
