2nd Grade Social Studies- Time, Continuity and Change

    Hi there.

    I have to do either a third grade or second grade "unit" plan using the Gradual Release of Responsibility (G.R.R.) for 3rd grade. The unit should last 2 weeks- but all the lessons don't need to be planned out.

    The theme is supposed to be based on the Social Studies "Big Idea" of Time, Continuity and Change.

    I need to develop essential questions and be able to defend how do deal with understandings and (mis)understandings.

    Any idea of a good topic to do for Second?

    I've been googling around state standards (our professor isn't very impressed with the Illinois ones)- not many ideas about where to look.

    (I teach pre-k- so anyone beyond Kindergarten is "Big" for me- I student taught in 4th but that was many moons ago- and in a very different district).

    What leaders did in the past affects what we do today.
    Holidays are celebrated to honor important leaders.
    Leaders, symbols, and traditions represent our government.
    • How does what leaders did long ago affect our lives today?
    • How do holidays honor people?
    • How do leaders, symbols, and traditions represent our government?

    Change takes place over time.
    Local communities change over time.
    Economic, social, and political factors motivate people to change.
    • How and why do communities change over time?
    • How do events show patterns of possible cause and effect?

    People work at many jobs.
    Throughout history people have had different kinds of jobs depending upon the economy and the region.
    • What types of jobs do people have?
    • How have jobs changed over time?

    Events have a beginning and an ending.
    Change takes place over time.
    Past and present times are different.
    Historical events have cause and effect relationships.
    • How do you know where events begin and where they end?
    • What events have cause and effect relationships?
    • How do events show patterns of possible cause and effect?
    • Why do things change (or stay the same) over a period of time?

    Thanks! I'm going to look into those - especially the communities and jobs changing over time. The example we did as a class was all about Chicago- otherwise that would be a good one- but I can look at one part of our city too I suppose.

    Well, here is more info on that one, then. Hope it helps.

    The student will
    A Interpret information presented in picture time lines to show sequences of events
    B Distinguish between past and present.

    Terms to know:
    Community: A place where people live, work, and play.
    Change: Something that happens to make things different.
    Family: A group of people who care for one another.

    PAST
    Schools - Small one-room buildings
    Communities - Smaller than today, with fewer people
    Transportation - Walking, riding horses, or riding in wagons
    Family Life - Handmade clothes, homemade games and family vegetable gardens

    PRESENT
    Schools - Large buildings with many rooms
    Communities - Larger than in the past, with more people
    Transportation - Riding in cars, airplanes, trains, and space shuttles
    Family Life - Store-bought clothes, electronic games and microwave food

    Essential Skills
    .. Gather and classify information.
    .. Interpret concepts expressed by pictures.
    .. Use time lines.
    .. Sequence events in chronological order

    I've never seen a book about this but how about discussing change from the viewpoint that children play differently as they grow?

    Thanks everyone- I'm still working on it- but it has to do with how transportation has changed the community of chicago over time.
